Functional Skills Maths

Being comfortable with numbers is a great life skill and will always be useful in the workplace.

These courses give you develop your numeracy skills with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages; use common measures, shapes and space and handle data effectively.

We can help you achieve your numeracy and maths Level 1 and 2 with a nationally recognised certificate. Even if you have struggled before, our fun and friendly tutors will support you to learn every step of the way.

What does a learner need to do?

Attend regular classes either in-person or online.

Allow time for project work and study each week.

Talk to your trainer for support and guidance if you need more support.

Bring a positive attitude to class and any work experience to make sure you get the most from the opportunity.

Using numbers and the number system

  • Read, write, order and compare numbers
  • Recognise and use positive and negative numbers
  • Multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100, 1000
  • Use multiplication facts and make connections with division facts
  • Calculate square route
  • Read, write, order and compare common fractions
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals up to two decimal places
  • Read, write, order and compare percentages in whole numbers
  • Calculate percentages of quantities, including simple percentage increases
  • and decreases by 5% and multiples thereof
  • Identify and know the equivalence between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Calculate with ratio, direct and inverse proportions

Using common measures shape and space

  • Calculate interest, percentage increase and discounts
  • Convert between units of length, weight, capacity, money and time
  • Recognise and make use of simple scales on maps and drawings
  • Calculate the area and perimeter of shapes
  • Calculate the volume and surface area of 3D shapes
  • demonstrate an understanding of line symmetry and the relative size of angles
  • Draw or interpret plans, elevations and nets of simple 3-D shapes
  • Calculate or use angles

Handling information and data

  • Represent discrete data in tables, diagrams and charts including pie charts, bar charts and line graphs
  • Use the mean, median, mode averages
  • Understand and work out probability
  • Express probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Interpret scatter diagrams and recognise positive and negative correlation

Eligibility

No prior qualifications are needed to register. We will provide a thorough induction, including an assessment of your current competency level and learning needs.

Qualifications and outcomes

Entry Level 3, Level 1 or 2 certificate from nationally recognised exam board. You can progress to further education and training, an Apprenticeship or job. We can help you take the next steps which are right for you.

Assessment

To pass the course you will need to complete one external assessment which is divided into

  • Section A: non calculator (25%)
  • Section B: calculator (75%)

Level 1 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade 3/D-E and a Level 2 qualification is equivalent to GCSE Grade 4/C.
