Access to HE offers a new pathway to a career in Healthcare

An innovative course delivered by national training provider Skills Training UK is supporting adults to achieve their ambitions of working within the healthcare sector.

The pandemic has shone a light on healthcare as a rewarding career path but many people may feel like it is out of reach. Healthcare professions such as nursing, midwifery, paramedic and radiography all require a minimum qualification level before embarking on a degree, which can be overwhelming for people who left school some time ago.

Skills Training UK is addressing the healthcare skills gap by supporting adults aged 19+ with the Access to Higher Education (HE): Health Professions Diploma, specifically designed to help people achieve the right qualifications needed to secure a place at university as a mature student.

The six-month course is free to access as part of the Government’s Adult Education Budget for people living in postcode areas within the West Midlands, Greater London Boroughs and the South East (Kent, Hampshire, Sussex). It is delivered online, full-time five days a week, with learners working towards a Level 3 Diploma that will ensure they are ready to progress to a Degree in a variety of healthcare topics, such as medical practitioner or nurse training. Skills Training UK tutors can also support learners to achieve qualifications in English and Maths equivalent to GCSE Grade 4/C before embarking on the course.

Former learner Sajada Begum enjoyed learning online, saying: “I love the flexibility of the course as well as the interesting content. The tutors are great and they help everyone to achieve their goals.”

Megan Baker also found the course to be a useful step for progressing into a healthcare career. She said: “I look forward to the lessons as they are really interesting and fun. I urge anyone who is interested in this course to go for it!”

“Access to HE: Health Professions is one of several courses that we are delivering as part of the Adult Education Budget to help employed and unemployed adults upskill, boost their confidence and find a career they love.”

Access to HE: Health Professions is enrolling now across the West Midlands, Greater London and South East (Kent, Hampshire, Sussex). To find out more or to register your interest, click here.
