Young people who have achieved success on Skills Training UK’s Positive Directions Study Programme and the Traineeships programme have had their achievements acknowledged at a special celebration event held at Wembley stadium. The event was attended by the new Mayor of Brent, Councillor Lesley Jones MBE, as well as representatives from local employers such as NHS surgeries, Morrison’s and BT.
The Traineeships and the Study Programme help young people aged 16-24 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), to achieve qualifications and employability skills before going on to an apprenticeship, full-time job or further education. Many young people, at the start of the programme have low self-esteem and have left school with few or no qualifications.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Brent, Lesley Jones MBE, said: “Most young people don’t know what they want to do or what they’re good at, so it takes a lot of time to try new skills before you learn what’s best for you. Skills Training UK and their Traineeships and Study Programmes really help young people by providing practical skills they need to kick start their career, as well as boosting their confidence and improving their employability.”
Umah Khan, a young learner who had completed a pre-apprenticeship programme in 2013, gave an inspirational speech to fellow learners at the event. Umah, who is currently working at Crawford Medical Centre, explained how you’ve got to “stick with it” and “always be enthusiastic” when it comes to looking for jobs.
Syed Jafery, Operations Director at Skills Training UK said: “The Celebration of Success event is about celebrating the excellent performance of our learners on the Study Programme and Traineeships, but above all it recognises that each learner here has made a very important decision to learn new skills and move closer to the world of work.
We are proud of the successes of all our young learners and we’re pleased to have helped them become confident, responsible and successful members of the community.”
