Skills Training UK's training centre in Walsall for unemployed young people has doubled in size to meet the demand for Traineeships for Industry and a new course, Traineeships for the Service sector, which has now been launched. The centre, opened in 2014, is equipping unemployed 19-24 year-olds with the skills they need to succeed in employment and helping them into work.
The training centre in Tameway Tower in Bridge Street, Walsall, has been expanded to two floors to keep pace with demand. There has been strong interest from young unemployed people wanting to increase their chances of employment as well as from local Black Country employers who are offering high quality, four-week work experience opportunities as part of the Traineeships for Industry programme.
As a result of the success in Walsall, Skills Training UK is planning a new training centre in Dudley which will open in May.
Stephen Crawley, Skills Training UK’s Director of Skills, said: “The uptake from local young people and from employers who need to fill their skills gaps, has been fantastic. We would like to thank Jobcentre Plus and Walsall Works, the Council’s employment campaign, for working effectively with us in referring young people for the Traineeships. As well as Traineeships for Industry we are now offering Traineeships for the Service Sector to train young people for jobs in retail, hospitality and business administration.”
Traineeships for Industry are equipping young people with the skills and confidence to win jobs in the industry sectors where employment opportunities and skills gaps are emerging. In particular they meet the needs identified by the Black Country LEP for skills in high growth sectors of manufacturing, engineering and the automotive industry.
A 10 week classroom learning programme includes an industry relevant qualification as well as English, Maths and ICT skills. As well as a work placement the young people have the opportunity to gain a Forklift Licence. Tutors provide one-to-one support and careers guidance, with the Trainees progressing either into jobs, an Apprenticeship or into Further Education.
The Traineeships for the Service Sector provides 10 weeks of classroom based learning with the opportunity to achieve a Work Skills Award and Food Hygiene certificate. The trainees then undertake a high quality work placement. The training is relevant for young people interested in working for employers such as Primark and Mid counties Co-Operative.
Any young person who receives Employment Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support is welcome to take up the new Traineeships for the Service Sector. By offering flexible working hours, homework packs and help with childcare, Skills Training UK have developed an inclusive programme that removes any additional barriers to employment that some young jobseekers face.
