Southern Water Improving Performance through Apprenticeships

Southern Water celebrated National Apprenticeships Week (6-10 February) by reflecting on the positive impact that investing in their people can have on business performance.

The company supplies fresh, quality drinking water to almost one million households and treats and recycles wastewater from nearly two million households across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

It has teamed up with Skills Training UK to offer Apprenticeships which lead to NVQ qualifications in Business Performance Techniques and forty employees are already involved, whose jobs range from facilities management, operations and water inspection to call centre and wastewater treatment operatives.

There are plans for another 35 Apprentices to come on stream when three new learning centres for employees are opened under the guidance of Skills Training UK over the next few months.

Noel Bonner, Learning & Development Facilitator, said: “We are strong advocates of vocational training which has enabled us to make significant improvements to the way we work. The Business Improvement Techniques NVQ covers all areas of the business and really does help to focus the minds of every employee undergoing training.”

With the help of a dedicated team of Skills Training UK assessors, staff are being taught how to work more effectively as individuals as well as part of a team; learning continuous improvement techniques; workplace organisation and problem solving. Jason Cordingley was keen to take up Southern Water’s offer to train for an NVQ Level 2 and is looking forward to taking a more active role in the company: “I want to have a very successful career with Southern Water and so I see this qualification as a great opportunity to develop and progress both personally and professionally. I hope that in the future this will lead to a role that has more responsibilities.”

As a result of Apprenticeship training, Noel expects to see a direct reduction in operating costs and waste as well as improved staff motivation and effectiveness.
