Success Story

Kayleigh’s life-changing NHS career

Kayleigh Martin achieved her dream of working in the NHS by improving her employability skills and getting a new qualification with one of Skills Training UK’s free Courses for Adults.

The 24-year-old from Dudley had always wanted to follow in her family’s footsteps by working in the healthcare sector. But despite having a wide variety of work experience and qualifications, she applied unsuccessfully to the NHS three times.

“I felt like giving up,” she said. “My mum and my brother work in the NHS and it’s a fantastic service, but I didn’t have a qualification in Business Administration to prove I could work well and efficiently in a business environment.”

Kayleigh passed all her GCSEs and gained a Double Merit in BTEC Music and Performance at her local college, before working as a supermarket check-out operator, hotel waitress, sales administrator, and social care worker.

“I wanted to gain as many skills and experiences as I could,” she said.

“I then tried to apply for administrative positions but you need qualifications in business administration.”

That’s when Skills Training UK came in. Kayleigh was scrolling through her news feed on Facebook earlier this summer when she came across our free Courses for Adults in the West Midlands.

“It caught my eye and I thought, let’s give it a go. A couple of days later, I got a phone call from my local Dudley Centre, I arranged to visit them and had an initial assessment.”

Kayleigh quickly enrolled onto our two-week Business Administration course.

Enjoyable and supportive

“It was really fun,” she said. “Our tutor, Phil, had a great sense of humour and made it an enjoyable, relaxing atmosphere. Along with games and team-building activities, I gained a more in-depth knowledge of business administration, as well as employability skills, different types of documents, how to deal with the public, acceptable uniform and more.

“Phil adapted his teaching style to suit my needs and I felt it was easy to ask for help. All the Skills Training UK staff were very supportive.”

The big moment came when Kayleigh applied for a fourth time to join the West Midlands Ambulance Service. This time, with her new BTEC qualification in Business Administration, she got the job.
