Music Practitioners

This performing arts qualification is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and range of skills needed to operate successfully as performing musicians and producers/composers.

Learners will:

  • demonstrate knowledge of theoretical and contextual issues relating to music style, audience and the music industry;
  • perform effectively on their instrument/with their voice;
  • rehearse and display musicianship skills in a number of professional scenarios;
  • initiate and develop repertoire;
  • understand relevant aspects of music technology.

What to expect from Skills Training UK

  • Energising and well-structured lessons, in small groups.
  • Individual support and mentoring to help you achieve your goals.
  • Access to our virtual learning environment for on-demand videos and materials to reinforce learning.
  • Extra support with English and Maths if you need it.

What does a learner need to do?

  • Attend regular classes either in-person or online.
  • Allow time for project work and study each week.
  • Talk to your training for support and guidance if you need more support.
  • Bring a positive attitude to class and any work experience to make sure you get the most from the opportunity.

The core units ensure that all learners will develop:

  • musical knowledge – learners will be able to identify and analyse key stylistic and musical elements in contemporary music
  • skills in musical sequencing software using a Digital Audio Workstation – includes mixing and editing and sampling.
  • live music performance.

The optional specialist units give centres flexibility to tailor the programme to the local area and give learners the opportunity to pursue more specialist interests. These units may include:

  • Composing music
  • Sound recording
  • Using a DAW
  • Instrumental study


No prior knowledge, understanding or skills are necessary.


The qualifications are 40% externally assessed and 60% internally assessed.

The externally assessed core unit takes the form of a timed assessment under controlled conditions and is marked by RSL. The remaining units are optional units and are internally assessed.

Qualifications and outcomes

There are four bands of assessment (pass, merit, distinction and unclassified) for each unit. Overall grades are banded pass, merit, distinction and unclassified.
